Live Stream on Saturday, April 30 at 7pm PT
An Actors' Reading Collective production in collaboration with Word for Word
Directed by Amy Kossow and Patricia Silver
Oksana Zabuzhko, author of “the most influential Ukrainian book in the fifteen years since independence” Fieldwork in Ukrainian Sex, returns with a gripping short story collection.
Oksana Zabuzhko, Ukraine’s leading public intellectual, is called upon to make sense of the unthinkable reality of our times. In this breathtaking short story collection, she turns the concept of truth over in her hands like a beautifully crafted pair of gloves. From the triumph of the Orange Revolution, which marked the start of the twenty-first century, to domestic victories in matchmaking, sibling rivalry, and even tennis, Zabuzhko manages to shock the reader by juxtaposing things as they are—inarguable, visible to the naked eye—with how things could be, weaving myth and fairy tale into pivotal moments just as we weave a satisfying narrative arc into our own personal mythologies.
At once intimate and worldly, these stories resonate with Zabuzhko’s irreverent and prescient voice, echoing long after reading.
Word for Word and the Actors' Reading Collective have joined together to bring you this reading to raise money for Humanitarian Aid to Ukraine. We aren't charging for tickets. Instead, we ask that you please donate to one of the organizations we support:
Americares is delivering medicine, medical supplies, and emergency funding to help families access essential health care services.
The International Rescue Committee is working to rush critical aid to displaced families.
World Central Kitchen, headed by chef and humanitarian José Andrés, is in Poland providing meals for the many refugees pouring into the country.
Razom for Ukraine: providing tactical medical and hospital supplies within the country of Ukraine. Their partners on the ground in western Ukraine are warehousing, sorting, and distributing their humanitarian aid to various hot spots across the country. The first shipment of tactical medicine is now arriving for the civilian territorial defenses in Kyiv and Zhytomyr.
Please RSVP.
